Action sports, urban culture and photography are Karen Johanson’s three primary passions.

Months after becoming obsessed with snowboarding, she uprooted herself from the urban climes of Seattle to venture to Mount Hood, where she a) created images for clients throughout the mountain sports world and b) discovered downhill mountain biking, a sport she had previously only experienced from behind the lens, when she moved into a house full of racers. From there, her world expanded to encompass not only downhill, but freeride, mountain biking.

Capturing images of these sports has resulted in a lifestyle where she has spent so much time in Whistler that she’s often mistaken for a local.

Her intrigue with urban culture has led to projects capturing cutting-edge fashion, electronica artists and body art.
